Deputy Jeremy Engel, 31 at the time, is currently appealing his termination for dishonesty in his initial job application and during the investigation

Weld County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Engel, 42, was terminated earlier this month for dishonesty after he admitted to “unlawful sexual contact” in 2015 against a 16-year-old.

The person, now 27, reported the “contact” to the sheriff’s office earlier this year according to a credibility disclosure notification that WCSO sent to the Peace Office Standards and Training Board — Engel would have been about 31.

WCSO started an internal investigation and, according to the notification form, Engel denied all allegations. He volunteered to take a polygraph test, it continues, failed the test and continued to deny allegations before ultimately admitting to the “unlawful sexual contact.”

Engel was hired in September 2023, and an investigation file summary clarifies that he was found to be dishonest in his original background screening during hiring and during the investigation, hence the credibility report.

WCSO is temporarily denying Blue Surveillance the full internal affairs investigation file because, according to Sgt. Daniel Chapman with WCSO, Engel is appealing the investigation’s findings which led to his termination. Due to a carve out in Colorado Criminal Justice Records statute, all appeals processes must be finished before an internal affairs investigation file can be released. Originally, Chapman claimed that WCSO did not allow copying of internal affairs records which was incorrect and against CCJRA statute.

The Weld County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment on whether they intend to pursue charges against Engel.

Engel declined to comment when reached by Blue Surveillance.
